Preparing Students for a Healthy and Successful School Year

As the new school year approaches, it’s essential to ensure that students are ready not only academically but also in terms of their health. A healthy student is better equipped to learn, participate in activities, and enjoy their school experience. At Pillar Health and Kenosha Community Health Center, our pediatric program, Pillar Kids, is dedicated to helping families prepare their children for a successful school year.

Annual Wellness Check

An annual wellness check is a comprehensive exam conducted by a primary care provider. This exam includes an assessment of healthy growth and development, both mentally and physically. It also involves updating immunizations and evaluating the child’s readiness for sports participation. Regular wellness checks are vital for detecting any potential health issues early and ensuring that children are on the right track developmentally.

Sports Physical

A comprehensive wellness exam that includes an evaluation for sports is preferred, however stand-alone sports physicals are also available as needed. These physicals ensure that students are physically fit to participate in sports activities, helping to prevent injuries and promote overall well-being.

Immunizations

Immunizations are a crucial part of keeping children healthy and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. According to state law, students admitted to Kenosha area schools must have all required immunizations. Here’s what you need to know for the 2024-25 school year:

For entry to Kindergarten through Seventh Grades, students need:

  • 4 doses of polio vaccine
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 4 doses of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis)
  • 1 Tdap at 7th Grade
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox), with exceptions allowed if the child has had a case diagnosed by a qualified health provider.
  • 2 doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

New requirement for entry to 7th Grade:

  • 1 MenACWY-containing vaccine (1st dose in series)

New requirement for entry to 12th Grade:

  • 1 MenACWY-containing booster (2nd dose in series)

These vaccines are included in the Wisconsin Vaccines for Children Program and are available at all Pillar/KCHC locations.

Our Pillar Kids care team is improving the health of Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth counties by providing quality, patient-focused, team-based healthcare to those who need it most.
