November is National Diabetes Month and we are stepping up to raise awareness about diabetes – a condition that touches more lives every year.

It’s a good time to talk about how “Today’s Diabetes Hits Different,” and we at Pillar Health and Kenosha Community Health Center are here to shed light on this important health topic.

What Exactly Is Diabetes?

Think about your body as a kind of energy factory. For it to run smoothly, it needs power, and it gets this power from something sweet—sugar in your blood. But here’s the catch: to use this sugar, your body needs a special helper called insulin. When you have diabetes, your body is having a tough time making or using insulin the right way. It’s like the factory’s main power switch isn’t working properly, and that can cause some serious issues if it goes unchecked.

The Different Faces of Diabetes

There are several forms of diabetes, and each type shows us how “Today’s Diabetes Hits Different”:

  • Type 1 Diabetes
With Type 1, the body decides to quit making insulin. People with Type 1 have to get insulin into their body through shots or a small machine called a pump. It usually starts when people are young, but it can begin when they’re older too.
  • Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 is when the body still makes insulin but doesn’t use it right. It’s like having a key that doesn’t fit the lock well. This type can often be managed with healthy eating, regular exercise, and sometimes medication. Click Here to Take the Type 2 Risk Test
  • Gestational Diabetes
This type can happen during pregnancy. It usually goes away after the baby is born, but it’s a warning sign that Type 2 diabetes might be a concern in the future.
Treating Diabetes

When it comes to treatment, it’s all about balancing your blood sugar levels. Some people need to take insulin or other medications to achieve that balance. Everyone with diabetes needs to eat healthy foods and stay active to help manage their condition.
