Bright Futures Begin Lead-Free: The Importance of Lead Testing for Families in Southeast Wisconsin

Lead poisoning poses a serious risk, especially to children under six, whose growing bodies are more vulnerable to its harmful effects. Exposure to lead can impact brain development, behavior, and overall health, leading to problems such as learning difficulties, lower IQ, and even long-term physical health issues. That’s why at Pillar Health and Kenosha Community Health Center (KCHC), we’re committed to raising awareness and providing lead screening services for families in Southeast Wisconsin.

Why Lead Testing Matters

Lead poisoning is preventable, but once it occurs, the damage can be irreversible. According to the EPA, there is no safe level of lead exposure in children. The agency emphasizes that even low levels of lead can affect cognitive development, behavior, and learning abilities. Unfortunately, lead exposure often comes from common sources such as old lead-based paint, contaminated soil, household dust, air, children’s jewelry, toys and even drinking water due to outdated plumbing systems.

The PillarKIDS School-Based Services Program

The goal of the PillarKIDS Program in partnership with KUSD and the KCPH School Nurses, is to meet children and families where they are and facilitate easy access to vital healthcare services. As part of this initiative, we conduct lead screenings to ensure early detection and intervention. By partnering with schools, we’re helping to safeguard the health of children and support their ability to learn and grow in a safe environment.

What Families Can Do:

• Get Your Child Tested: If your home was built before 1978 or if you suspect exposure to lead, it’s important to schedule a lead test for your child.
• Prevent Exposure: Keep your home clean and free from dust, ensure children wash their hands frequently, and be cautious with old toys or furniture that may contain lead-based paint.
