Everyone is Sick! What Can I Do to Stay Healthy?

It seems like everywhere you turn in Southeast Wisconsin, someone is coughing or sneezing. With RSV, flu, and norovirus spreading, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and your family.

Here are some tips to protect yourself and your loved ones from these illnesses:

  • Wash Your Hands Often: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Handwashing is one of the best ways to stop the spread of viruses.
  • Clean Surfaces: Disinfect high-touch areas like doorknobs, phones, and counters.
  • Mask Up in Crowded Places: Wearing a mask can help reduce exposure to airborne viruses for yourself and others.
  • Avoid Crowds When Possible: Stay away from crowded areas, especially during peak virus seasons.
  • Get Vaccinated:
    • Flu Shot: Protects against the flu.
    • RSV Vaccine: Available for older adults and pregnant women.
    • COVID Booster: Stay protected against COVID-19.
  • Stay Home: If feeling unwell, spare your friends and coworkers by staying home until you feel better.

Let’s break down what these illnesses are, how to spot their symptoms, and when to see a doctor.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

RSV is a common virus that usually causes cold-like symptoms. While mild for most people, it can lead to serious breathing problems, especially for infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing or trouble breathing (in severe cases)

Treatment: There’s no cure for RSV; the virus needs to run its course. Most people recover with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications to treat symptoms such as fever or discomfort. Severe cases may require medical care or hospitalization for breathing support.

When to See a Doctor: Seek medical attention if you notice severe difficulty breathing, wheezing, or symptoms that worsen instead of improving.

Flu (Influenza)

The flu is a contagious virus that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It can range from mild to severe and is more dangerous for young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions.

Symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Headache

Treatment: Most flu cases can be managed with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications to reduce fever and discomfort. Antiviral medications, like Tamiflu, may be prescribed to shorten the illness if taken early.

When to See a Doctor: Seek care if symptoms include persistent high fever, chest pain, confusion, or difficulty breathing.

Norovirus

Norovirus is a stomach bug that spreads easily and causes vomiting and diarrhea. Often called the “stomach flu,” it’s not related to the flu virus but can spread quickly in schools, workplaces, and homes.

Symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Mild fever (sometimes)

Treatment: There’s no specific treatment for norovirus. Staying hydrated is crucial, as vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Drink water or oral rehydration solutions to stay safe.

When to See a Doctor: Seek medical help if you or a loved one shows signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dark urine, or dizziness.

Where to Get Tests
  • RSV and Flu: Visit your primary care provider, urgent care centers, or local walk-in clinics for testing. Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS also offer flu testing.
  • COVID-19: Free COVID tests are available at pharmacies, community health centers, and online through government programs like COVIDtests.gov.
  • Norovirus: For testing, contact your primary care provider or urgent care for guidance on stool sample collection if needed.

What to Eat and Drink to Stay Healthy

Fueling your body with the right nutrients can help strengthen your immune system and keep you feeling your best during cold and flu season. Here’s what to include in your diet:

Immune-Boosting Foods
  • Citrus Fruits: Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are packed with vitamin C, which supports your immune system.
  • Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard provide antioxidants and essential nutrients like vitamin A and iron.
  • Garlic and Ginger: Both have natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that may help fight off illness.
  • Yogurt: Rich in probiotics, yogurt promotes gut health, which plays a key role in your immune system.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and walnuts are rich in vitamin E, zinc, and healthy fats to support immune function.
Stay Hydrated
  • Water: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated and your immune system functioning properly.
  • Herbal Teas: Ginger, chamomile, or green tea can soothe sore throats and provide additional antioxidants.
  • Broth-Based Soups: Chicken or vegetable broth hydrates you while providing electrolytes and nutrients.
  • Avoid Sugary Drinks: Sugary beverages can suppress your immune system and should be limited.
Foods to Avoid
  • Processed and fried foods, as they can cause inflammation and don’t provide the nutrients your body needs.
  • Excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate your body.

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and hydration can help you stay healthy and fight off infections. Pairing a nutrient-rich diet with regular exercise and proper hygiene will help you stay strong all season long!
