Health Literacy is the ability to find, understand and use health information and services to make health related decisions.

Examples include understanding prescription drug information and understanding instructions from a health provider.

Health literacy is especially important in Wisconsin, where chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer are leading causes of death, contributing to over 40% of fatalities annually. With 34% of Wisconsin adults classified as obese, residents are at increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, health disparities persist, particularly in African American and Native American populations, who face higher rates of infant mortality, heart disease, and diabetes. Nearly 20% of Wisconsin adults also experience mental health issues each year, but access to care remains a significant challenge.

At Pillar Health and KCHC, we aim to address these issues head-on by providing a comprehensive range of services. These include primary care, dental care, mental health support, chronic disease management, and preventive screenings. By focusing on health education and ensuring our services are accessible to all, we strive to reduce the prevalence of these chronic conditions and improve the mental health and well-being of our community.

NHEW 2024: Empowering Southeast Wisconsin

This year’s NHEW theme emphasizes empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the healthcare system and make informed decisions about their health. For residents in Southeast Wisconsin, Pillar Health and KCHC are committed to providing essential healthcare education that helps bridge the gap between understanding and action. By offering services like dental care, behavioral health resources, and personalized health plans, we ensure that individuals from all walks of life have access to the care they need.

Why Health Literacy Matters

In a diverse region like Southeast Wisconsin, health literacy plays a pivotal role in reducing healthcare disparities. Many in our community face challenges related to finances, language and transportation that create barriers to accessing health services. KCHC and Pillar Health are dedicated to managing these barriers by offering resources and education that empower individuals to take control of their health. Whether it’s understanding how to manage a chronic illness or knowing when to seek medical attention, health literacy improves overall outcomes and reduces costly emergency room visits.

Health Disparities and Access to Care

The disparities in healthcare access across Southeast Wisconsin are a significant concern. Low-income communities and communities of color often face greater challenges in accessing the care they need. By prioritizing health education, Pillar Health and KCHC aim to close the gaps in healthcare equity. We believe that everyone, regardless of income or background, deserves the resources needed to live a healthy life. Our community outreach programs and services help ensure that these individuals have access to preventive care, screenings, and the information necessary to make well-informed decisions.
