Many people like to make pretty big New Year’s resolutions, especially as the clock strikes midnight. A new year promises a new beginning for everyone. Why not make 2019 the year you focus on overall good health? The Kenosha Community Health Center (KCHC) is a nonprofit organization offering comprehensive healthcare which enables our patients to maintain their well-being by addressing health disparities and providing access for all. One of our goals in 2019 is to educate patients about the importance of early colorectal cancer screenings and awareness.
Did you know? Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States-but it doesn’t have to be. Getting screened for colorectal cancer beginning at age 50 helps prevent the disease. Colorectal cancer can have fewer noticeable symptoms than other types of cancer (or even no symptoms at all), so screenings are particularly important.
In fact, screenings save lives! You can double or even triple the impact: bring two, three-or more-friends or family members with you this month to get screened at the Kenosha Community Health Center. It’s our mission to improve the health of Kenosha area residents, and to provide easy access to quality health care.
Stool tests to detect signs of colorectal cancer are administered at KCHC. Unlike colonoscopies, stool tests are non-invasive but do need to be done more often. (Also, any abnormal results from a stool test will lead to a colonoscopy). There were nearly 100,000 new cases of colon cancer and 40,000 new cases of rectal cancer diagnosed in the United States in 2017. Early detection is key, as death rates from colorectal cancer are still highest in African-American men and women. Contact your nearest KCHC location to schedule your appointment today-and help make 2019 a healthy year for yourself and your family!
